A History of the Highland Games in Boone: Tradition in the High Country

A Grandfather Mountain Tradition Since 1956

The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games (GMHG) were first held in 1956 and have grown into one of the most prestigious and recognized Highland gatherings in the United States. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of MacRae Meadows, this multi-day festival honors the traditions of Scottish clans and culture with competitions, ceremonies, and community.

What started as a regional event has since become an international draw—welcoming athletes, dancers, musicians, and clanspeople from across the globe. And it all happens just 30 minutes from downtown Boone.

What You’ll Experience at the Games

Whether you have Scottish roots or simply love cultural festivals, the Highland Games offer something for everyone:

  • 🏋️ Traditional Scottish athletic events – Think caber toss, hammer throw, and sheaf toss, all requiring remarkable strength and skill.
  • 🥁 Bagpipe bands and Scottish dancing – The sights and sounds are mesmerizing, with dancers and pipers competing in colorful traditional attire.
  • 🛡️ Clan gatherings and heritage tents – Learn about different Scottish clans, tartans, and ancestry through exhibits and live storytelling.
  • 🍖 Authentic food and craft vendors – Enjoy meat pies, shortbread, and whisky while browsing handmade goods inspired by Celtic culture.
  • 🌲 Opening Torchlight Ceremony – Held at dusk on the first night, this moving tradition welcomes all clans with music and reverence.
