Appalachian Theater: A Place for Community
Just steps from The Horton Hotel in the heart of downtown Boone stands a glowing marquee with nearly a century of stories behind it. The Appalachian Theater isn’t just a building—it’s a beacon for the arts, a gathering place for the community, and one of the many reasons we love being in this town.
For our guests, it’s also one of the most enriching—and unexpected—experiences you’ll find in the High Country.

A Storied Past, a Vibrant Present
Originally opened in 1938, the Appalachian Theater was once a centerpiece of Boone’s cultural life, drawing audiences for films, concerts, and civic events. After decades of wear and eventual closure, the community rallied together to restore it. In 2019, the doors reopened, and since then the theater has once again become a thriving stage for live performance, indie film, storytelling, and connection.
As locals, we’re proud. As hoteliers, we’re thrilled to share it with our guests.
From Bluegrass to Broadway
The App Theater’s calendar reflects the spirit of Boone: rooted in tradition, but always evolving. One night might feature Grammy-winning bluegrass, the next a documentary screening, and the next a youth theater performance or international film. There’s something for everyone—and it’s all happening just a few steps from your room at The Horton.
Ask our front desk about what’s playing during your stay. Whether you’re into jazz trios, literary panels, or Appalachian folk tales, there’s bound to be something that resonates.
Where Locals and Travelers Meet
What we love most about the Appalachian Theater is its ability to bring people together. Locals gather with out-of-towners, college students sit next to retirees, and applause echoes off walls that have seen generations come and go. It’s a space that reminds us why small towns matter—and how the arts can turn strangers into neighbors.
Stay Close to the Stage
When you stay at The Horton Hotel, you’re not just booking a room—you’re stepping into the cultural heartbeat of Boone. The Appalachian Theater is just across the street. Come early for a rooftop cocktail, then stroll over for an evening of music, film, or performance. You’ll leave not only entertained—but inspired.Boone is more than a mountain town—it’s a community. And places like the Appalachian Theater remind us why that still matters. We can’t wait to share it with you.
