How to Get to Boone: Your Journey to the High Country

How to Get to Boone: Your Journey to the High Country

At The Horton Hotel, we welcome guests from near and far. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your journey to Boone.

By Car: The Scenic Route Awaits

Boone is a quintessential mountain town with well-connected highways and stunning drives from all directions.

  • From Charlotte (2 hours) – Take I-77 N to US-421 N. It’s a smooth, scenic route and one of the most common ways guests arrive.
  • From Asheville (2 hours) – Travel east on I-40, then take NC-226 and the Blue Ridge Parkway north. Perfect if you want a slower, more scenic arrival.
  • From Raleigh/Durham (3.5 hours) – Take I-40 W to US-421 N. This is a straightforward route through North Carolina’s rolling foothills.
  • From Atlanta (5 hours) – Head north on I-85, then merge onto US-321 N. You’ll pass through charming small towns on your way up the mountain.

🚗 Pro Tip: The final stretch of your drive will be winding and mountainous—beautiful, but best done during daylight hours if you’re unfamiliar with the area.

By Air: Closest Airports

While Boone doesn’t have its own commercial airport, we’re within a few hours’ drive of several major hubs:

  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) – ~2 hours
  • Tri-Cities Airport (TRI) in TN – ~1.5 hours
  • Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) – ~2 hours
  • Piedmont Triad International (GSO) in Greensboro – ~2.5 hours

Rental cars are available at all airports, and we recommend renting a vehicle to fully enjoy the area once you’re here.

Public Transit and Rideshare

Boone is best navigated by car, but if you’re already in the region:

  • AppalCART provides free public transit around town.
  • Uber and Lyft are available, though limited—especially in the evenings.
  • Boone Rent-A-Car offers local rental options if you arrive without transportation.
